PopPeeper – POP3 checker

Since I have been using a plugin to Miranda to check my POP3 account, during the time period where I couldn’t use Miranda I had to look for a small footprint POP3 checker. My requirements were:

  • low memory footprint, the smaller the better
  • message preview – I want to see who it’s from and the subject before launching my mail client
  • mimize to tray
  • freeware

I found a TON of POP3 checkers and here were my results for the ones I tried:

  • eprompter – 5.8MB – too much memory
  • emailchk – 5 MB – too much memory
  • magic mail monitor – 5.5 MB – too much memory
  • mailchecker – 3MB – no preview
  • natty – 1.6 MB – no preview
  • mailpeek – 500kb – no system tray
  • PopPeeper – 1.7 MB – WINNER

So, I ended up using PopPeeper. It met all my needs and only used ~1.7MB of memory when running. Of course, now that Miranda works again, I don’t need it any more. Oh well. Maybe this info will help someone else in the future.

Miranda works again!

After a few days of downtime, Miranda finally works again. Miranda is a multi-protocol IM client and it seems AOL cut off its access. They released a patch that fixes the AIM support. WooHoo! I was using Gaim in the interim and it was painful. Miranda really is a much better client than Gaim, IMHO. It has a very low memory footprint, is totally customizable via plugins, is freeware/open source, does all the major IM protocols, runs from a flash drive, and just works and acts like I want it to. Check it out if you haven’t already.
