Dumpster Diving for Concert Posters and a Guitar – PLUS: Name That 80s Band Photo!

all 3

Last weekend I went to the local storage unit place to help my sister clean out her storage unit. She goes to the dumpster to get rid of some trash and she comes back saying there is something that looks like a guitar case in there. I go and fish it out and it’s a Fender case with a pretty nice Yamaha guitar in it! I took it to a friend at work and he is restringing it now (so no pics til it comes back) but he said it’s in great shape! WOW! he said I could get maybe $150 for it give or take. I’ll post pics when I get it back.

Then, we found three framed concert posters from 1981. All three measure 19″x12″ and each is in excellent shape – it looks like they have been framed most of their life. Above is a pic of all three together and here are the pics of each individually (click to enlarge each):

Pros and Cons of Telecommuting

I telecommuted for about a year until recently and thought I’d make a list of some pros and cons of telecommuting that I’ve discovered:

Pros

  • There’s nothing like getting paid to work in your pajamas.
  • On cold days or rainy days, you don’t have to go outside at all and deal with the weather.
  • You can shave or not shave – nobody cares.
  • Save on your water bill by not bathing as often.
  • Huge savings on gas for your car. Less mileage put on your car too.
  • No annoying co-workers to come by and incessantly talk about things like trimming the hedges or little Timmy’s peewee football game.
  • More time with family, especially children.
  • Tax write-offs for internet access, home office, etc.
  • Can play any music you want as loud as you want.
  • Snacks and drinks are as close as the refrigerator.

Cons

  • You know immediately when the cat has used the litterbox.
  • No going to lunch with your coworkers and no socializing with them.
  • You can go stir crazy if you don’t get out. Groceries, fast food, even (gasp) The Mall – must get out!
  • More time with family, especially children.
  • Snacks and drinks are as close as the refrigerator.
  • Distractions at home. Mail, internet, pets, etc.

Good news and bad news

Good news: Today I started a new job with an awesome company that all true geeks would know and recognize. I’m so excited. Should be lots of fun and a great opportunity. It’s Java programming with Hibernate, Struts, J2EE, etc., etc.

Bad news: I found out today around 3:00 PM that my grandfather passed away. He would have been 93 years old next month.
