Mythbusters - Adam Savage interview President’s library destoyed by fire
Aug 31

Since I have been using a plugin to Miranda to check my POP3 account, during the time period where I couldn’t use Miranda I had to look for a small footprint POP3 checker. My requirements were:

  • low memory footprint, the smaller the better
  • message preview - I want to see who it’s from and the subject before launching my mail client
  • mimize to tray
  • freeware

I found a TON of POP3 checkers and here were my results for the ones I tried:

  • eprompter - 5.8MB - too much memory
  • emailchk - 5 MB - too much memory
  • magic mail monitor - 5.5 MB - too much memory
  • mailchecker - 3MB - no preview
  • natty - 1.6 MB - no preview
  • mailpeek - 500kb - no system tray
  • PopPeeper - 1.7 MB - WINNER

So, I ended up using PopPeeper. It met all my needs and only used ~1.7MB of memory when running. Of course, now that Miranda works again, I don’t need it any more. Oh well. Maybe this info will help someone else in the future.
